Platanias Beach Chania
Platanias beach, Chania: One of the best beaches in West Crete at one of the most known resorts in the island.
Platanias beach, Chania, is a natural extension of Agia Marina beach to the west. Platanias, a very renowned resort in West Crete, together with Agia Marina, form a marvelous coastal zone which is one of the best places for holidays in Crete.
Platanias beach, as Agia Marina beach, is sandy and shallow in its most part. The two beaches form together a mega-beach with a total length of about four kilometers, the biggest in Chania region.
The distinct beach of Platanias, Chania
The fine golden sand of Platanias beach, together with its crystal clear water, will not fail to amaze every visitor. Near the beach, as in many other Chania beaches, you will find many pine trees, some of which are really close to the sea!
In Platanias beach there is a picturesque small harbor with fishing boats, which every summer is being photographed by thousands of visitors in the area. In every part of the beach, which is very well organized, you will find sun beds and parasols.
A characteristic feature in Platanias beach, as in Agia Marina beach, is that during the summer almost all the activities of the village take place here: the number and the variety of the bars and the restaurants by the sea is impressive - you just have to choose where you will spend your free time.
Opposite of Platanias beach, you also see the beautiful islet of Agii Theodori, or Thodorou, which is also visible from Agia Marina Beach. From Platanias you can see the western side of the islet, where there is a big cave. This cave has inspired the ancient Greek mythology: according to it, the island was a huge sea monster which attacked West Crete, but Poseidon turned it into stone in order to protect the island. The cave that is visible today was nothing less than the big open mouth of this legendary monster!
